From Curiosity To Commitment: My Journey Towards Veganism

How personal values shaped my approach to vegan interior design and responsible materials.

Veganism has surged in popularity in recent years. Millions of people are choosing a plant-based lifestyle for a multitude of reasons. For me, this decision was driven not just by personal values but also by the desire to create a more compassionate and sustainable world. In this article, I share a very personal story about why I turned to veganism and why I believe aligning my business with these values is essential.

It’s, in essence, a story about how responsible design can contribute to a more sustainable, compassionate world.

The Turning Point

Growing up in a household where vegetarianism was the norm, I was heavily influenced by my mother’s values. Raised on a farm in Germany, she experienced first-hand the realities of farm life and the suffering animals can endure.  That experience led her to develop a deep respect for animals and the natural world. This foundation shaped the environment in which I was raised and my understanding of food, nature, and how we interact with the world around us.

As I became a mother myself, my perspective on food and its broader implications shifted dramatically. With children of my own, I became increasingly aware of the world I’m helping to shape for them. I wanted to lead by example, demonstrating compassion, sustainability, and wellness through my choices. This desire led me to explore the meat industry’s impact on both the planet and animals, ultimately guiding me toward transitioning from vegetarianism to veganism.

One moment that stands out in my journey was when I came face-to-face with dairy cows and the emotional cost of losing their calves and milk. This connection, as a mother, resonated deeply, and the realisation pushed me to educate myself about the broader impacts of the meat and dairy industries on animal welfare and the environment.

Switching to veganism then felt like a natural next step. As I delved deeper into food, nutrition, and sustainability, I felt more connected to the earth and became mindful and intentional with my choices.

My veganism sparked a new passion for cooking, experimenting in the kitchen, and learning more about nutrition to support our family’s health; however, it gradually became part of a broader commitment to living more consciously, from the products I buy to the businesses I support. It was no longer just a dietary choice – it became a mindset and a way of life.

Founding A Studio On Vegan Values

With veganism influencing all aspects of my life, from products, clothing, and beauty to travel and entertainment, I realised over time that these values could not remain separate from my professional life. Interior design shapes the spaces people inhabit every day, and every material used in those spaces carries an environmental and ethical footprint.

Aligning my business with my core values is driving me forward. This shift will make my work more meaningful and allow me to promote the principles of ethical decision-making, health, and sustainability while showing how responsible design can make a difference.  Through my work, I hope to leave a lasting impact – a positive legacy that will inspire others for years to come

So, What’s Vegan Interior Design

Vegan interior design promotes ethical and sustainable living by incorporating materials and eco-friendly practices into the design process. This is not just about aesthetics, we’re creating healthier environments one project at a time.

This involves using alternatives to animal-based products and materials like leather, wool, and silk. We opt instead for sustainable materials such as bamboo, cork, and plant-based leathers made from sources like pineapple or mushrooms. Not only do these materials reduce our carbon footprint, but they also support animal welfare by ensuring that no animals were used in their creation.

Materials like natural bamboo, organic cotton, and hemp are sustainable and free from the harmful chemicals often found in traditional furniture and décor. Whether you’re motivated by animal rights, environmental concerns, or health considerations, vegan interiors are a more conscious and impactful way to decorate your home or workspace.Vegan design combines ethical choices with high-quality style, allowing us to build calming sanctuaries that are both beautiful and responsible.

Sustainable design is shaping the future. Everything from zero-waste production methods to incorporating renewable energy sources and biodegradable packaging,. As a vegan interior designer, it’s about finding new ways to integrate these practices into every aspect of the design process.

This Is Just The Start

The journey is not without its challenges. It requires a thoughtful selection of materials and collaboration with suppliers who share similar values. The tough questions are the right questions to ensure that products meet sustainability and ethical standards at every level. But this effort is incredibly rewarding, as it contributes to a healthier, more caring world.

As I continue down this path, I’ve encountered a vibrant community of like-minded individuals who share my vision. Embracing a vegan, ethical, and health-conscious approach to interior design enhances our well-being and fosters a more harmonious relationship with the planet and all its inhabitants.

By making mindful design decisions, we’re helping to shape a future where compassion, health, and sustainability are at the forefront of our choices. While I’m still early in my journey, the possibilities excite me. Sustainable materials like bamboo silk, Tencel, hemp, and organic cotton offer ethical alternatives to traditional options like wool, and the process of integrating them into my work continues to align with what I stand for.

I hope to continue spreading the message that veganism is not just a trend – it’s a commitment to building a better, more sustainable world for future generations. If you’re reading this as a brand owner, it also enhances your reputation. Your customers care.
